What is a paper packaging box?

A paper carton box is a common type of packaging material designed to ensure the safety of the goods inside. By placing items and products inside the carton box, we can guarantee their protection. This is especially important for items that are prone to damage during transportation, such as frozen foods, fresh produce, fruits, fresh flowers, and many other products. In general, these products are often stored in carton boxes to optimize the preservation and transportation process for businesses.

Structure of a paper packaging box

A carton box is made from wood fibers and has a three-dimensional structure thanks to the combination of hydro bonding without the need for adhesive. It consists of two main parts: the exterior (comprising two paper surfaces) and the interior (the paper core). The paper core is typically made up of corrugated strips of paper.

In terms of colors, there are three main colors for carton boxes, including brown, white, and kraft (natural) color. The weight of each carton box may vary, with different paper grammages. For example, kraft-colored boxes have the lowest grammage, around 95 g/m², while white boxes have the highest grammage, around 275 g/m². The ability to resist bending or breaking of the carton box increases with higher paper grammage.

Classification of paper packaging boxes based on corrugation:

There are several types of corrugations for carton boxes based on the height of the corrugated waves:

  • Wave A: With a wave height of 4.7mm, it usually withstands well the distribution of force on the surface.
  • Wave B: With a wave height of 2mm, it typically withstands puncture forces well.
  • Wave C: With a wave height ranging from 3.4mm to 4.5mm, it combines good force distribution capabilities like Wave A but is slightly less robust.
  • Wave E: With a wave height of 1.5mm, it is usually used for lightweight items.
  • Wave BC: A combination of Wave B and Wave C, providing greater thickness and high-load-bearing capacity.
  • Wave AC: A combination of Wave A and Wave C, optimizing both force distribution and load-bearing capacity.

Depending on the type of goods that need to be packaged, one can choose different types of paper packaging boxes with varying corrugation to ensure aesthetics, cost-effectiveness, and good load-bearing capabilities. For special products or those with significant weight, such as seafood and agricultural products, a 5-layer paper box with AB corrugation may be the best choice to optimize product protection.

Classification of paper packaging boxes based on the number of layers:

Classification of paper packaging boxes based on the number of layers:
  • 3-Layer Paper Packaging Box:

This type of box is made from 3 layers of paper, consisting of 2 outer layers of flat paper and 1 corrugated layer in the middle. 3-layer paper boxes are commonly used to package lightweight and small items such as books, clothes, toys, and other light products. This is the most common type of box, accounting for over 90% of the total production of carton boxes.

  • 5-Layer Paper Carton Box:

These boxes are made from 5 layers of paper, including 2 outer layers of flat paper, 2 corrugated layers, and 1 inner layer of paper. 5-layer carton boxes are typically used for packaging heavy items like furniture, machinery, and export goods. Due to their sturdy structure, 5-layer boxes provide better protection for high-weight products.

  • 7-Layer Paper Packaging Box:

These carton boxes consist of 7 layers of paper, including 3 corrugated layers and 4 flat paper layers. This type of box is often used for packaging and transporting heavy items such as ceramics, porcelain, wood, heavy machinery, and large electronic equipment.

Classification of paper boxes based on structure:

Paper carton boxes are also classified based on their structure and shape to suit specific types of products:

  • Adhesive Seal Paper Carton (Regular Box): A simple box with an adhesive seal, suitable for various packaging purposes.
  • Tuck-Top Box: A box with a tuck-in lid for convenient resealing when the box needs to be opened multiple times.
  • Book-Style Box: Designed with lids at both ends, making it easy to access the contents from either side.
  • Snap-Lock Box: A box with a snap-lock design to securely seal the box, ensuring product safety.
  • Snap-Lock Box with Tabs: Similar to snap-lock boxes, these have additional tabs for extra security.
  • Two-End Snap-Lock Carton: A box with snap-lock lids at both ends, suitable for long products.
  • Paper Carton with Bottom Locking Tabs: Boxes with snap-lock lids on top and bottom to ensure product safety.
